Norwood Park’s spacious and quiet streets often make the neighborhood feel like a city suburb, and, in fact, that’s how Norwood Park started. Like most parts of Chicago, the arrival of transportation, namely railway tracks, spurred the development of housing and established the expansion of a community area. The first settlers envisioned the area having a park life community feel, with lots of open space. The area that was once known as Norwood Park Village, later became part of Chicago in 1893.
Today that sense of spaciousness, comfort and community is still present. The Norwood Park neighborhood is full of single-family homes, many of them large, multi-level houses designed with grandeur and sophistication in mind.
As a primarily residential neighborhood, Norwood Park is in many ways a tranquil version of city living. With its position just off of the I-90 Kennedy Expressway, residents of the area have easy accessibility to downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport, while also maintaining some distance from the usual bustle and business of the inner city. Two main roads, Milwaukee Ave and Northwest Highway, run diagonally through the neighborhood and serve as both thoroughfares and main strips of business, entertainment and dining.
Each year in March, the neighborhood becomes a sea of green as people flock to the area for the Northwest Side Irish Parade, a 17-year tradition. The residents of Norwood Park will also come together for festivities like the July Beer Walk or the Spring and Winter Wine Strolls hosted by the Norwood Park Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Where is Norwood Park?
Norwood Park accounts for four community areas which are Old Norwood Park, Norwood Park East, Union Ridge, Big Oaks and Oriole Park. It is nestled between the Jefferson Park neighborhood, to its east, and Edison Park to its northwest. Its borders are roughly N Nagle Ave on the east, Foster Ave on the south, N Canfield Ave on the west and Devon Ave on the north, with the exception of some smaller portions of the neighborhood which jut out north to Albion Ave and west to Cumberland Ave.
The neighborhood area includes the zip codes 60646, 60631 and 60656 and is part of the 41st, 45th and 39th wards.
Norwood Park Transportation
The community areas of Norwood Park neighborhood are fairly accessible by public transit, and the neighborhood’s position along the I-90 Kennedy Expressway makes it an attractive option for those traveling by car on a daily basis. Getting to and from downtown Chicago and the city’s largest international airport, O’Hare, is easy and can be relatively quick especially on days and hours when traffic is minimal.
The CTA bus routes that service the Norwood Park neighborhood are the #88 Higgins, #56 N Milwaukee, #92 Foster, and #68 Northwest Highway. There’s also the CTA Blue line train at Harlem Ave., and for commuter rail travelers, the Norwood Park Metra station is located at the intersection of Avondale Ave and N Nina Ave.

If you’re in the market for a house, Norwood Park is an area to strongly consider. This northwest side neighborhood is marked by charming, elegant and stately single-family homes. Some of the homes were recently renovated and others maintain their character, but could use some cosmetic changes and updates.
The residential properties of Norwood Park are a mix of Victorian, English Tudor, colonial-style and two-level brick homes. There are a few new construction homes, flaunting some gorgeous interiors with luxurious kitchens, open floor plans, high end design, master suites with walk-in closets and other attractive features. However, most home buyers considering the Norwood Park community area will likely find well-maintained homes with newer finishes and key features like ample space and lighting, three or more bedrooms, hardwood floors, eat-in kitchen and spaces, either indoor or outdoor, for entertaining. Depending on size and location, houses in Norwood Park will range from the low $300K’s to upwards of $800K.

Keep it casual at Lucky Grill (7779 W Talcott Ave #3840) and savor some classic American breakfast dishes like Biscuits and Gravy or Country Fried Skillet. Spend the late morning and early afternoon exploring Old Norwood Park, and perhaps make a visit to the Norwood Park Historical Society Museum (5624 N Newark Ave). Check the museum’s website for programming and events, like a Giant Yard Sale or Craft Boutique, all of which are hosted on site at the museum, also known as the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, believed to be the oldest home in the Chicago area. For an afternoon bite, head over to Iron Horse Ale House (6158 N Northwest Hwy) and try one of their brick-oven pizzas paired with a craft beer. Take an afternoon stroll in the Caldwell Woods, sitting northeast of W Devon Ave and Milwaukee Ave, and then for the evening make dinner plans at Mom’s Old Recipe (5760 N Milwaukee Ave) where you’ll enjoy Mexican flavors inspired by the traditional dishes of the state of Morelos, which is where owners the owners of this family-owned restaurant have their roots.

While not as restaurant dense as some other neighborhoods, Norwood Park does have its own collection of good eats that run between homey and casual to creative and different. Here are some places that are sure to be on your must-try list.
Superdawg Drive-in (6363 N Milwaukee Ave) - pull up, order and delight in a classic drive-in dining experience at this family-owned, and well-known, hot dog stand.
Bangkok Belly (6132 N Northwest Hwy) - Bring your own beverage to pair with the dishes at this Pan-Asian restaurant that range from Thai to sushi.
Amitabul (6207 N Milwaukee Ave) - Vegans will delight at Amitabul’s menu, which is dedicated to Korean, creative vegan food.
Spuntino Pizza - a few different varieties of pizza served here, including gluten-free crust and the Chicago SMOG: sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper.
NOK Restaurant (6075 N Milwaukee Ave) - falafels, combination plates and other traditional Persian dishes to be enjoyed here.
Pasta D'Arte Trattoria Italiana (6311 N Milwaukee Ave) a broad range of wines are available to enjoy with handmade pastas and other Italian favorites.
The Garage Bar & Sandwiches (6154 N Milwaukee Ave) an extensive beer list and a rooftop deck are some of the big draws at this neighborhood bar and restaurant.
Norwood Park Neighborhood Amenities
There are a few sizable parks throughout the Norwood Park community area, along with some small parks and playgrounds. Of the larger sized parks Oriole Park (5430 N Olcott Ave) on the southwest end of Norwood Park is perhaps the largest, housing the Oriole Park Branch Chicago Public Library (7454 W Balmoral Ave). It also has a baseball field, a soccer/football field and tennis courts for the particularly athletic and active residents.
Then there’s Norwood Park (5801 N Natoma Ave) situated just east of the Old Norwood Park area which has a pool, a basketball court and a dedicated dog-friendly area. Other green areas are sprinkled across different parts of Norwood Park and then there’s access to the Caldwell Woods off the northern boundary which has an aquatic park, Whealan Pool Aquatic Center (6200 W Devon Ave), a fun spot for families in the summer.
Norwood Park is also the site of AMITA Health Resurrection Medical Center (7435 W Talcott Ave), a medical campus that includes women’s health, internal medicine and rehabilitation centers.
On the educational side, the Norwood Park community has a few Pre-K to 8th grade schooling options within its borders, including Norwood Park Elementary School (5900 N Nina Ave),
Edison Park Elementary School (6200 N Olcott Ave), John W Garvy Elementary School (5225 N Oak Park Ave), Oriole Park Public School (5424 N Oketo Ave), and Daniel C. Beard Elementary School (6445 W Strong St). All of the aforementioned are public schools. For high school options, there’s William Howard Taft High School (6530 W Bryn Mawr Ave) one of the largest and high performing schools in Chicago, and an all girls private school alternative called Resurrection College Prep High School (7500 W Talcott Ave).
For groceries, residents can buy their food and necessities at Shop & Save Market (6312 N Nagle Ave) and Jewel-Osco (7342 W Foster Ave).
